Manage your Iota

Start with Iota installation. This page covers an installed account service, not an Omega or Omikron deployment.

Access to /run/iota/iota.sock grants the full operator role, including account management, credential export, identity changes, and daemon control. Only grant it to people you fully trust. It is not a read-only monitoring role.

The Linux installer uses the iota-operators group. The NixOS module uses iota. Start a new login session after changing group membership. Do not make the socket world-writable to fix a permission error.

Terminal window
iota status
iota health
iota components
iota logs --limit 100
iota omikron status
iota daemon startup-status

For startup failures, use sudo journalctl -u iota-daemon.service -b on an installer-managed host, or sudo journalctl -u iota.service -b on NixOS. Review logs before sharing them. Remove credentials and personal data.

Running iota without a command opens the terminal interface. Parts of that interface are unfinished. Prefer the explicit commands here for operations. iota --help lists the command groups.

On a standard Linux installation, configuration lives in /etc/iota/config.yaml and persistent state in /var/lib/iota. State includes storage and identity. Custom paths can differ. Check your service definition before moving files.

Use iota config get to inspect the loaded configuration. On unmanaged installs, edit the configuration file and run iota config reload. Restart the service after listener or TLS changes. iota config set supports only selected keys, not arbitrary YAML fields. For example:

Terminal window
iota config set read_receipts_enabled false

On NixOS, change the module’s settings or settingsFile and rebuild instead. Do not edit its generated stateDir/config.yaml.

Enabled network and loopback web listeners need a TLS certificate and key that the service user can read. Parent directories must also allow access. Renew certificates before expiry and restart Iota after renewal. Loopback mode alone does not select a loopback bind address.

Monitor free disk space. storage_limits controls asset size, per-user quotas, active uploads, and reserved free space. Replacing an asset temporarily counts both copies. See backups and moving hosts before touching storage or identity files.

Terminal window
iota users list
iota users show 42
iota users add create alice
iota users add tu /secure/alice.tu
iota users credential export 42 --destination /secure/alice.tu

Replace 42, alice, and file paths with your account details. A .tu file contains account credentials. Keep it private and transfer it securely. Import attaches an account through the account service; it does not copy message history or assets from another host.

Invitations are not a complete operator workflow. Local Iota invitations are unsupported, the terminal invitation screen is unfinished, and the CLI has no invitation command. Omega-backed invitations require a working upstream service. Do not promise local-only onboarding through invitations.

These account operations are different. Check the user ID and take a backup before destructive changes:

Command Effect
iota users hosting release 42 --yes Releases the hosting assignment through Omega and retains hosted data locally.
iota users data purge 42 --yes Purges this Iota’s stored user data, not the remote account.
iota users account delete 42 --yes Requests account deletion using stored credentials, or credentials supplied with --tu /secure/alice.tu. This is not a host move.
iota users repair force-detach 42 --yes Detaches locally without changing Omega. This can leave assignments inconsistent.

For an inconsistent account, start with iota users repair diagnostics 42. iota users repair reconcile 42 checks the remote assignment. Force-detach is not a replacement for a successful release.

Back up state before updating. On an unmanaged system installation, use sudo iota update check and sudo iota update apply. On NixOS, update your flake lock and rebuild. See installation for the update timer, signing checks, and channel restrictions. Replacing a binary does not reverse data migrations.

Planned

Standalone federation is intended to let Iotas discover and communicate with each other directly or through configured relays. Backend support exists, but the main Tensamin client does not yet support this as an end-to-end setup.
